Distribution: Indo-Pacific, Hawaii, Australia, French Polynesia
Note: This species has four recognised subspecies: G. cauerensis cauerensis from the Indian Ocean and into the Pacific to Hawaii and Rapa Islands; G. c. australis from Australian waters; G. c. hawaiiensis from around the Hawaiian Islands; and G. c. pascuensis from the water by Easter Island
